Vineyard and terroir
The Chardonnay comes from an outstanding pergola-trained parcel in the Punggl site, cultivated by vintner partner Frassen. The vineyard lies on the scree of Magrè at 230–450 metres above sea level, on sedimentary soils rich in limestone and dolomite. The parcel may eventually enter the Löwengang selection and is farmed organically.
Grapes
100% Chardonnay from the 2023 harvest.
Vinification
Harvest took place on 17 August 2023. Approximately 20% of the lot underwent whole-cluster fermentation. The directly pressed component first spent one night on its skins. After one week, the wine was racked, the whole clusters were pressed, and the press wine was blended back. A portion of this component was subsequently used in the 2023 GAUN Chardonnay. PRE CHA · XXIII was bottled without filtration.
Ageing
Matured for 16 months on full lees in tonneaux.
Technical data
Alcohol: 9.5% vol. Acidity: 5.7 g/L. Production: 1,258 bottles.
Vintage notes
The 2023 experiment examined how early Chardonnay could be picked while retaining healthy, fully developed fruit. Its low alcohol was the outcome of redefining ripeness independently of conventional analytical parameters.
Label / history
Comets is Alois Lageder’s experimental series: some projects are fleeting and others continue for years. Each bottle bears a personalised label marked with a fingertip-painted comet’s tail.
