Vineyard and terroir

The Chardonnay comes from the family’s Löwengang vineyards in Magrè. Alois III acquired the first parcels here in 1934. The vineyards occupy an alluvial cone of dolomitic rock formed by the Fenner stream over millions of years, with calcareous soils suited to Chardonnay. Morning sunlight reaches the vines, while afternoon winds from the Fenner gorge and the Ora wind from Lake Garda provide cooling and freshness.

Sélection massale is used to preserve robust, characterful vine material and genetic diversity. Some Löwengang Chardonnay vines are again being trained in the traditional pergola system, protecting the fruit from excessive sun and helping maintain liveliness and freshness under changing climatic conditions.

Grapes

100% Chardonnay.

Ageing

RARUM presents mature vintages side by side to show their stylistic differences, development and ageing potential. The limited 2025 assortment is supplied in a wooden case with a cork remover and re-corker.

Vintage notes

The RARUM 2025 edition contains the 2011, 2015 and 2022 vintages. Each reflects the evolving climatic conditions of its growing season and the corresponding adjustments made in the vineyard and cellar.

Label / history

Chardonnay was introduced to Alto Adige around 1835 by Archduke Johann and was subsequently propagated by Edmund Mach. Its regional revival came during the 1980s. The variety became closely linked to the Lageder family through the Magrè vineyards and the creation of LÖWENGANG Chardonnay.

The estate’s origins reach back to the Middle Ages: the Gaun family was recorded as its owner in 1369 and received the noble title “von und zu Löwengang” in 1674, giving Tòr Löwengang its name. Alois III purchased the property in 1934. Alois IV later commissioned a new cellar within the historic estate and moved the company headquarters from Bolzano to Magrè in 1995.
