Vineyard and terroir
RÖMIGBERG Schiava comes from the steep Römigberg estate vineyard northwest of Lake Caldaro, at 250–330 metres above sea level. Its south-southeast-facing slopes receive intense sunshine and experience a warm, Mediterranean climate. The site combines varied soil and climatic conditions: loamy moraine deposits lie above rocky, gravelly dolomitic limestone, with remnants of ancient glacial deposits in the subsoil. Cows and oxen graze among the vines and olive trees as part of the estate’s mixed farm organism.
Grapes
Schiava.
Vinification
The wine undergoes extended maceration and fermentation, partly in wooden fermenters.
Ageing
Maturation is divided between stainless-steel tanks and large casks. Selected components remain in contact with skins and stems for six months. The extended cellar maturation is intended to build complexity while retaining Schiava’s characteristic lightness.
Technical data
The published 2023 vintage has 11% alcohol by volume.
Tasting profile
Ruby-coloured with a pink shimmer. The subtly pronounced, fresh nose combines red berries, flint and floral nuances. The palate is medium-bodied, fine and dry, with fresh fruit, softness and a mild character.
Serving and pairing
The wine can be served chilled during hot summer weather or poured as an accompaniment to a meal. Pair with starters, pasta, grilled or fried seafood, veal and barbecue dishes. Best enjoyed between two and five years from vintage.
