Vineyard and terroir
The nine-hectare Terrapieno vineyard lies at 100–400 metres above sea level in the Valpantena Valley of eastern Valpolicella. Its relatively cool sites delay ripening, encouraging precise, elegant flavours. The poor, freely draining soils consist of granite and decomposed volcanic rock. Vines average 20–30 years of age and are trained using both Pergola Veronese and Guyot systems.
Grapes
100% Pinot Grigio.
Vinification
The grapes were picked by hand, destemmed and crushed, then chilled to 10°C while travelling to the press to limit extraction of phenolics from the skins. The juice was chilled immediately and allowed to settle naturally. Fermentation took place at 12–16°C in 1,200 hL stainless-steel tanks to retain fruit character. Cool, gentle handling removed the need for harsh fining and helped preserve the delicate aromas. Bottled under screwcap. Suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
Technical data
2023: 12.5% ABV, pH 3.35, acidity 4.8 g/L and residual sugar 4 g/L. Available in 750 ml bottles. Winemakers: Matt Thomson and Michele Peroni.
Tasting profile
An intense, balanced single-vineyard Pinot Grigio. Lifted pear and bread-crust aromas lead to a palate with ample weight, a silky texture and suggestions of dried herbs. The finish is dry, with zesty acidity and saline minerality.
Vintage notes
The 2023 growing season was very hot and dry. Yields were reduced, while the harvested grapes were highly concentrated and of excellent quality.
