Vineyard and terroir
The selected fruit comes from Tenuta La Fuga in the historic Camigliano area, on the southwestern slope of Montalcino at about 350 m above sea level. The estate has 9.8 ha of vineyards and lies close to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its southwestern exposure, proximity to the sea and moisture-rich soils help the grapes develop high polyphenol levels. The soils contain fossils and material from the extinct Monte Amiata volcano. Planting density is 4,000–5,500 vines per hectare, with average yields not exceeding 4.5 tonnes per hectare.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested fully ripe in mid-October. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at a controlled 28 °C, followed by 20 days of skin maceration and malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The 2018 vintage matured for four years in 25 hl Slavonian oak barrels, followed by at least six months in bottle.
Label / history
The first harvest was in 1996.
