Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from the Tenuta La Fuga estate, about 350 m above sea level on the southwestern slope of Montalcino, near the village of Camigliano in the historic Camigliano area. The estate has 9.8 hectares of vineyards, close to the sea. The soils are rich in fossils and in material from the now-extinct Monte Amiata volcano.
Vinification
The Sangiovese grapes are selected and harvested when fully ripe. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at 26–28 °C, followed by 12 days of skin maceration.
Ageing
The wine is aged for 12 months, including 6 months in Slavonian oak barrels of 30 and 40 hectolitres. After bottling it rests for at least 2 more months in the winery's cellars.
Vintage notes
2019: a successful vintage for Tuscan winemakers. Intense summer heat was the season's most noticeable feature. The high temperatures were unfavourable for some Tuscan vineyards, reducing yields and acidity in the wines, and may have been a result of climate change. Heavy rain in late July saved most vineyards from drought. Favourable conditions continued until September, and a crop of excellent quality was harvested on time.
Label / history
Tenuta La Fuga is owned by the sisters Fabia Cornaro dell'Acqua and Giovanna Cornaro Folonari, respectively the wife of Ambrogio and the mother of Giovanni Folonari. It is the smallest estate in the Folonari group. The Folonari wine story began in the late 18th century with Fratelli Folonari. In 1912 Ambrogio's grandfather Italo Folonari and his brother Francesco bought Ruffino. In the late 1960s the family sold Fratelli Folonari, which mainly made table wines, and turned to estate-bottled wines. In 2000 Ambrogio left Ruffino and founded the Ambrogio e Giovanni Folonari holding company with his son. Tenuta La Fuga, which produces Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino, is one of its estates.
