Storia
Barbacan is run by Angelo Sega together with his sons, Luca and Matteo, who are described as pioneers of natural winemaking in northern Lombardy. The winery owns 6 ha of vineyards in San Giacomo di Teglio, in the Valtellina region. Matteo and Luca's family preserves up to 20 different clones of the Chiavennasca variety, some of which grow in vineyards that are more than 100 years old.
Terroir
The winery is located in the heart of the Alps, in northern Lombardy's Valtellina region, in San Giacomo di Teglio. The 6 ha of vineyards grow on terraced slopes that are dizzyingly steep and covered with snow in winter. The finest vineyards on the estate, the Sol and Pizamej crus, are located more than 500 meters above sea level.
Vinificazione
At this altitude, with dizzyingly steep slopes and climbs, working the land and vineyards takes an extraordinary amount of effort. The Sega family's approach is based on natural viticulture, with people and their knowledge serving the land and terroir. As farmers in the Alps, they preserve the diversity of their ancient local vines and the cultural identity of traditional farming practices, following ancient cycles every season while preserving their identity as Alpine people.
The Sega family makes only natural wines, with respect for the terroir and the grapes. Close attention to every detail and minimal intervention in natural processes result in wines that are distinctive, refined, and authentic. Their wines reflect each vintage with all its quirks and individual character, always different and always unpredictable.
