Vineyard and terroir

The fruit comes from the Villa Novare estate in the heart of Valpolicella Classico. The east-facing vineyard has iron-rich marl soils and a planting density of 5,000 vines per hectare.

Vinification

After harvest, the grapes dry naturally for 120 days before destemming and pressing. Maceration takes place at 4–5 °C, followed by fermentation in cement vats for 50 days at 22 °C.

Ageing

The wine matures for 30 months in traditional 2,500-litre Slavonian oak casks, with a portion aged in French oak barriques. It then rests in bottle for at least six months.

Tasting profile

Rich and appealing.

Label / history

Bertani was founded in the mid-19th century in Quinto di Valpantena, north of Verona, by the brothers Giovanni Battista and Gaetano Bertani. Their involvement in wine began after meeting Mr Guyot, and they introduced new grape-growing and winemaking techniques. They were also the first locally to sell their wine in bottles rather than the oak barrels then traditionally used.

In 1888, almost 30 years after the winery's foundation, the Academy of Agriculture, Arts and Commerce in Verona examined the brothers' work from scientific and practical perspectives and presented them with a special gold award. Today, the estate encompasses 130 hectares around the family's historic 18th-century villa, while its cellars and winery are in Grezzana.
