Vineyard and terroir
Ca’ Florian comes from the family’s historic Ca’ Florian cru in the hills of Pedemonte, within Valpolicella Classica. These are among the family’s earliest vineyards, adjoining the house where Giacomo Tommasi settled. The Pergola Veronese-trained vines occupy small dry-stone terraces known as marogne, a structure that improves rainwater drainage.
The soil is mixed and comparatively rich in iron and magnesium. Oxidation of these minerals gives it a darker color and is associated with aromatic precursors oriented toward dark red fruit, especially black cherry and blackberry. The cru combines the cherry character associated with the Marano valley with sweet spices, structure and elegance linked to the Negrar valley, and produces wine suited to extended maturation.
Grapes
Corvina 75%, Corvinone 20% and Rondinella 5%.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested and selected manually into 5–6 kg crates. After a second selection, they undergo 100 days of appassimento in a ventilated drying loft on traditional handmade bamboo racks called arele. Pressing takes place in January. Fermentation proceeds slowly for 30 days in oak vats with indigenous yeasts only.
Ageing
Maturation lasts four years: the first year in barriques and the following three years in 35 hl Slavonian oak casks. Bottle ageing continues for at least another year.
Technical data
Alcohol is 15.5% vol. The listed bottle size is 750 ml. Production is limited to fewer than 9,000 bottles per vintage.
Integrated vineyard management is used for environmentally sustainable farming. No animal-derived products or products containing allergens are used during wine production. Cellar procedures emphasize resource efficiency, waste reduction and recycling. Packaging includes FSC-certified organic corks, FSC-certified label paper and recycled-paper cardboard.
Tasting profile
Deep ruby red with garnet highlights. The bouquet is elegant and complex, combining very ripe red fruit—cherry, blackberry and plum—with licorice and bitter cocoa. The palate is full-bodied and austere, with enveloping tannins, notable freshness and a very persistent finish.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18°C. It can be enjoyed by itself as a meditation wine or served with game, red meats and mature cheeses. Its structure and freshness support extended cellar ageing, with a suggested horizon of one or two decades.
Vintage notes
The 2013 growing season began with a long but relatively mild winter, followed by a rainy spring with temperatures below the seasonal average. A warm summer and marked day-to-night temperature variation, especially in September, produced healthy, intensely aromatic grapes. Mild, dry autumn conditions enabled slow, even appassimento. The resulting wine showed balance among fruit, polyphenols and acidity; its tannins and freshness support long ageing and continued evolution.
Label / history
Ca’ Florian has been the intimate center of the Tommasi family’s home and vineyards since 1902. The Riserva was conceived as a single-vineyard tribute to these origins, preserving local traditions embodied by the dry-stone marogne, Pergola Veronese training and drying on bamboo arele.
