Vineyard and terroir

Vigna Santa Rosalia covers 0.880 ha in Alba, close to the boundary with Diano d’Alba. The west-facing site lies at 300 m. Its Barbera vines were planted in 1952 at 4,630 vines/ha, with 0.8 × 2.7 m spacing. They are trained to a vertical canopy and pruned by traditional Guyot, using K5BB rootstock. The approximate yield is 7,000 kg/ha.

The site’s soil and position support a floral, elegant expression of Barbera.

Grapes

100% Barbera.

Vinification

The wine is conceived as a particularly clean expression of the vineyard. Wood contact is avoided completely.

Ageing

No wood is used. The bottle is consistently closed with a glass stopper.

Tasting profile

A floral, elegant and fresh style of Barbera. A published assessment of the 2016 describes hazelnut, toast, blackberry, plum, cherry, cassis, blond tobacco and nutmeg on the nose. The palate combines black cherry, tart redcurrant, Quetsche plum, floral accents and almond, with minerality, freshness and fine, elegant tannins.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18°C with salami, mortadella or richer, fattier meats; the wine’s freshness provides contrast to the meat. It is generally released in July following the harvest. Enjoy it young, although it can retain good quality for three to four years.
