Vineyard and terroir
The Chardonnay comes from an estate vineyard in Barolo at 230 m. The English presentation gives a south-west exposure and an area of 1.64 ha, while the Italian version gives a west exposure and 0.64 ha. The soil contains 33% sand, 42.6% silt and 24.4% clay. The vines are vertically trained and traditionally Guyot-pruned on K5BB rootstock, with rows planted at 1 × 2.7 m. The English data give 4,630 vines per hectare, whereas the Italian data give 3,700. Yield is approximately 7,000 kg/ha. The planting year is 1991; the description of the 2024 vintage also refers to estate Champagne-clone plantings established in 1991 and 1994.
The high proportion of silt and sand is associated with a mineral white wine of good structure and balance, with floral and yellow-fruit characteristics.
