Vineyard and terroir

The Freisa vineyard lies in Barolo at 300 m, faces west and covers 0.3100 ha. Planted in 1991 on K5BB rootstock, it is trained to a vertical canopy and pruned by traditional Guyot. Rows are spaced 0.8 × 2.7 m, giving 4,630 vines per hectare. Yield is approximately 7,000 kg/ha.

Grapes

Freisa.

Vinification

Fermentation and skin maceration take place at 26 °C for six days, followed by malolactic fermentation. Although Piedmontese Freisa is often lightly sparkling, this expression is vinified as a still, dry wine with firm structure.

Technical data

The published review for the 2024 vintage records 13.5% alcohol.

Tasting profile

The 2024 has aromas of red rose, geranium, dark culinary spice and wild berries. Cranberry, pomegranate, raspberry and white pepper shape the fresh, savory palate, supported by lively acidity and supple but evident tannins.

Serving and pairing

Serve at approximately 18 °C with mortadella, sausages and richer, fatty foods able to match the grape’s rustic tannins. The wine is normally released in April after the harvest. It is intended primarily for youthful drinking but can develop for another three to four years.
