Storia
The foundation
Mario founded Podere Calcinaia, although the precise date and the circumstances of its establishment are not documented. The estate’s Tuscan farming tradition extends back more than 30 years.
A mixed Tuscan agricultural estate
Over the course of its development, Podere Calcinaia combined viticulture and olive growing. Its agricultural resources now include about 10 hectares of vineyards and more than 500 olive trees. Wine and extra-virgin olive oil are produced from this land.
Podere Calcinaia today
The agricultural enterprise operates as Podere Calcinaia di Spalletti Gloria, with Gloria Spalletti identified as its proprietor. The estate has also developed a hospitality identity under the name Tuscany Home & Vineyards, opening part of the property to guests through two apartments, a tasting room, winery visits and private tastings. One apartment, La casa di Mario, commemorates the founder.
Terroir
Podere Calcinaia lies at Località Calcinaia di Sciano 30/B in Certaldo, in the province of Florence, Tuscany. Its recorded coordinates are 43.54269341927286, 11.056007730143898.
The vineyards occupy approximately 10 hectares in the hills around Certaldo. Breezes moving through these hills and the Tuscan sun form the principal natural influences identified with the rows. The property also looks toward the Chianti hills.
Certaldo Alto, the medieval upper town, is approximately 3 km away. San Gimignano is about 15 km from the estate, Siena approximately 40–42 km to the south and Florence approximately 45 km to the north.
Vinificazione
Podere Calcinaia cultivates approximately 10 hectares of vineyards in the Certaldo hills. The rows receive daily care, and the estate presents its approach as a continuation of Tuscan agricultural tradition founded on respect for the land. The vineyard work is portrayed as hands-on and closely tied to the rhythms of nature, sunlight and time, without defining a formal farming system or publishing individual vineyard protocols.
Wine is made on the property from the agricultural resources of Podere Calcinaia. The estate’s account of production emphasizes work performed by its own team and the time required for the wine to develop.
The winery is an active part of the visitor experience. Guided visits lead guests through the production premises and explain how the wines are made before continuing with a tasting in the dedicated tasting room.
Filosofia
Podere Calcinaia presents wine and olive oil as direct expressions of its land. Its philosophy joins the continuation of Tuscan farming tradition with deep respect for the countryside of Certaldo. Human work, sunlight and patience are treated as the essential elements behind each bottle.
The same values shape the estate’s hospitality. Podere Calcinaia defines Tuscany Home as an extension of everyday family life rather than a conventional hotel. The intended experience favors simplicity, quiet, contact with the rows and a sense of being welcomed as a family guest rather than treated as a tourist. Formal luxury is secondary to the landscape, local flavors and the atmosphere of a lived-in agricultural property.
