Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from sites in northern, southern and eastern Montalcino, whose differing microclimates contribute to the wine’s character. The 6 ha Caparzo vineyard in northern Montalcino lies at 220 m, on sandy-clay soils with Pliocene sedimentary rock. Il Cassero, in the south, is at 270 m and has stonier soils over a slate and clay base. The 7 ha San Piero – Caselle vineyard in the east lies at 250 m on sandy-clay soil.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested mechanically at optimal ripeness. Alcoholic fermentation takes seven days at a controlled 28–30 °C, with rack-and-return and pump-overs. If the skins are particularly thin, maceration continues for another five days. Malolactic fermentation occurs spontaneously, after which the wine is bottled.
Tasting profile
Harmonious and elegant, with a savoury, approachable style.
Vintage notes
The 2020 growing season was unusually warm and dry. A mild winter was followed by a spring of sunny days and light showers. The hot, dry summer brought the grapes rapidly to phenolic ripeness, while cool nights preserved their acidity and bright aromatic character. Harvest took place in good weather at the end of September, with the grapes in excellent condition. The year was also made difficult by restrictions associated with the Covid pandemic. The vintage was expected to peak between 2022 and 2025.
