Vineyard and terroir

Podere Casisano stands at 480 m on the hills southeast of Montalcino, surrounded by old oak woodland and olive groves. The wine draws on a mosaic of microclimates and soils within the estate. Nine hectares are reserved exclusively for Brunello; the spur-cordon-trained vineyards face southeast and grow on mixed, stony soil rich in galestro. Grapes are selected from different parcels across the estate's 22 ha of vines. The dry, ventilated microclimate and strong day-to-night temperature shifts help preserve healthy fruit.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese Grosso.

Vinification

Parcels are vinified separately. Traditional maceration lasts approximately 25 days on the skins. Estate vinification for this Brunello takes place in stainless-steel tanks with indigenous yeasts. After separate maturation, the lots are blended before further bottle ageing.

Ageing

Three years in Slavonian oak casks no larger than 60 hl, followed by at least six months in bottle.

Technical data

Alcohol: 14% vol. Available formats: 750 ml and 1.5 L.

Tasting profile

Deep ruby tending toward garnet. Fresh, elegant aromas combine Sangiovese fruit and spice. The palate is harmonious and firmly structured, with velvety tannins and a long finish. The 2016 is particularly expressive of fresh red fruit and spice, with substantial tannic structure, vibrant acidity, mineral definition and long aromatic persistence.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18°C with game, furred game, grilled red meats or mature cheeses.

Vintage notes

The 2016 season began with renewed rainfall but almost no snow. Spring temperatures were average, with rain becoming less frequent from mid-June; late June brought sunshine and good ventilation. Summer was relatively dry, while August and September delivered marked diurnal temperature variation. Healthy, complex fruit with elegant tannins and natural acidity was harvested by mid-October after a prolonged dry and ventilated period.
