Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from Maremma, Colline Pisane, Colli Fiorentini and Chianti Classico. The sites include dense, very fine-textured limestone soils at 400–450 metres; stony clay-and-limestone galestro at around 400 metres; and clay, silica-rich and limestone soils at 250–300 metres.
Vinification
The best bunches are harvested by hand at peak ripeness and gently pressed. The must undergoes spontaneous alcoholic fermentation followed by malolactic fermentation in oak barrels.
Ageing
The wine matures in oak barrels and barriques for around three years, followed by a further 12 months in bottle in the winery’s cellars.
Label / history
The name “Monte Antico” means “Ancient Mountain” in Italian. Neil and Maria Empson designed the label as a tribute to the land that captured their hearts.
