Vineyard and terroir
The first Chardonnay vines in the Poggio area were planted between 1967 and 1975, initially covering 6 ha. In 1984, the Chardonnay vineyards were expanded to 10 ha. The estate’s vineyards lie at 500 m above sea level and have rich soils and a favourable climate.
Vinification
The grapes were harvested in early September and transported to the winery in 12 kg boxes. After gentle pressing, the must was chilled. Sixty per cent fermented in stainless-steel tanks and the remaining 40% in oak barriques. A portion representing 25% of the must underwent 12 hours of skin maceration. Partial malolactic fermentation followed.
Ageing
The wine rested on its lees for eight months in French oak barrels, half new and half one year old, with weekly bâtonnage.
Label / history
Al Poggio literally means “hill” or “high ground.” The wine emerged from 20 years of research and experimentation intended to express the character of Chardonnay and the estate’s terroir.
