Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from five estate vineyards at 500 metres above sea level. The estate attributes grape quality to rich soils, a favourable climate and careful vineyard management. As part of its vineyard redevelopment, 21 hectares were converted to a V-shaped training system, allowing more leaves to receive sunlight.
Grapes
The wine is made mainly from newer Sangiovese clones. These emerged from extensive vineyard trials that included grafting around 50,000 vines and identifying the site best suited to Sangiovese.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand, and each variety is fermented separately. Fermentation takes place over an extended period in barriques. The final blend is assembled after fermentation.
Ageing
The wine matures for 12 months in previously used oak barrels, followed by extended bottle ageing.
Tasting profile
The 2023 is elegant, lively, refined, precise and expressive of its terroir and vintage.
Label / history
Ama was first released in 2010. The estate had begun replacing its older vines in 1996; by 2010, the younger vines in its DOCG vineyards were yielding enough fruit for a new Chianti Classico. The wine takes its name from Ama, a small village between two hills in the commune of Gaiole in Chianti, Siena.
