Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow in the company's own vineyards on limestone and clay soils. The estate lies in the Colli Berici (Berici Hills), a series of ancient volcanic formations between Verona and Padua. The climate there is very mild and sunny, much like the Mediterranean, and grapes have been grown in the region for thousands of years.
Grapes
Negroamaro and Sangiovese form the blend. A small amount of Primitivo is sometimes added, depending on the vintage.
Vinification
After harvest the grapes go to the winery, where they are pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature.
Ageing
The wine spends a short time in oak barrels.
Label / history
Cielo e Terra was founded in 1908. The name joins terra, Italian for earth, with Cielo, the surname of the founding family. In 1930 Pietro Cielo began expanding and improving production, and in 1962 new vineyards were planted and output increased. The winery is now run by the fourth-generation brothers Luca and Pierpaolo Cielo. It farms around 300 ha in the Veneto.
The estate belongs to Gruppo Cantine Colli Berici (The Colli Berici Group of Cellars), which has around 4,000 ha of vineyards, where most of the company's wines are produced. With the group's winemakers, Cielo e Terra takes part in a project to improve every stage of winegrowing and production in the Berici Hills, from vineyard to bottle.
Luca Maroni called the wine "the absolute height of craftsmanship" and "one of the best wines of the year". Over five years it received three gold medals at Mundus Vini and the Berlin Wine Trophy.
