Label / history

Cielo e Terra was founded in 1908. Its name joins the Italian word for earth, terra, with the surname of its founders, the Cielo family. Under Pietro Cielo the company began expanding and improving production in 1930; new vineyards were established and production increased in 1962. The winery is now led by the fourth-generation brothers Luca and Pierpaolo Cielo. It owns around 300 ha of land and is one of the largest producers in the Veneto.

Cielo e Terra belongs to Gruppo Cantine Colli Berici, a winemaking group with around 4,000 ha of vineyards, where most of the company's wines are made. With the group's winemakers, it takes part in a project to improve every stage of winegrowing and production in the Colli Berici, from vineyard to bottle.

The Colli Berici are a series of ancient volcanic hills between Verona and Padua. The climate is very mild and sunny, similar to the Mediterranean, and grapes have been grown there for thousands of years.

The Primitivo grape is tied to legends going back to Ancient Greece. It is believed to have been used for Falernian wine, a strong, long-aged wine softened with honey or another wine. The name is linked to Mount Massico and to Falernus, who lived there and was visited by Bacchus; in return for his hospitality, the god gave him a grapevine later used for that wine. Zinfandel is generally considered a variety of Primitivo.
