Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow in the commune of Cinigiano, in the Montecucco area of southern Tuscany, at 300 metres above sea level. The soils are of complex composition, which the producer calls the wine's deepest voice. This mosaic of terroirs gives each vine its own character and complexity, and every plot is studied and cultivated according to its soil. Organic and biodynamic practices have been followed in the vineyard and cellar since 2003, with minimal intervention in the natural process.
Vinification
Fermentation is spontaneous and followed by extended maceration. The cellar approach is to guide the grapes rather than control them, using technology as a quiet tool to help the wine express itself.
Ageing
The wine is aged in barrel. The text gives no vessel size or duration.
Tasting profile
Rich and complex yet soft and balanced; an authentic, expressive red closely connected to the hills of Montecucco.
Label / history
Castello ColleMassari is a fortified village rather than a simple medieval castle: a protected agricultural complex established in the eighth century by Cistercian monks and the Santa Maria della Scala hospital. An agricultural system of twenty-two estates was then created between Siena and Maremma, which gave the name Massari. In the Middle Ages, massari (or massaro) meant a representative of an agricultural organization. The winery's philosophy is to make a wine for every occasion.
