Vineyard and terroir
The fruit is grown at Castello ColleMassari in the commune of Cinigiano, in the Montecucco area of southern Tuscany. The vineyards lie at 300 metres above sea level in a dry climate with low rainfall and marked differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures. The estate’s soils include mineral-rich clay, limestone marl, gravel and conglomerates; the vineyards used for Melacce have sandstone soils and are well exposed to sea breezes. These breezes and the sharp temperature changes help preserve freshness and aromatic character. The vineyards are farmed organically with minimal intervention.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested fairly early to preserve their liveliness. Fermentation takes place at low temperature in steel tanks to retain the varietal aromas. Organic practices and minimal intervention are also followed in the cellar.
Ageing
The wine rests on its fine lees, softening the palate.
Tasting profile
Refreshing and elegant, with fresh, lively varietal aromas and a softened palate.
Label / history
Castello ColleMassari has a layout resembling a fortified village and agricultural complex. It was founded in the eighth century by Cistercian monks and the Santa Maria della Scala hospital as part of a system of twenty-two farms between Siena and Maremma. The name Massari derives from this system: in the Middle Ages, “massari” or “massaro” meant a representative of an agricultural organization.
