Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow in the Montecucco area of Upper Maremma, at the Castello ColleMassari estate at the foot of Mount Amiata, 320 m above sea level. The estate is a working farm of 1,200 hectares, 110 of them under vine. The vineyards have been converted almost entirely to certified organic methods. The landscape and microclimate suit Sangiovese, and the terroir gives the grapes the best of their natural qualities.
Vinification
The must ferments in stainless steel tanks at low temperatures, to preserve the distinctive, juicy fruit character of the grapes.
Ageing
The wine ages for ten months, half in steel tanks and half in old oak barriques. After bottling it rests at least another 6 months.
Tasting profile
Juicy and fresh, with impressive depth and energy. The aroma is bright and inviting, with plum, dark cherry, wild strawberry, rhubarb, violet and mineral notes. The palate is silky and unfolds in waves of ripe red and blue fruit, layered with delicate hints of lavender and spice.
Serving and pairing
Suited to appetizers, hearty meat dishes and small pies. The 2023 vintage can be drunk now or kept until 2029.
Label / history
Castello ColleMassari is a medieval castle that has survived to the present day, with origins dating back to the Renaissance. Claudio Tipa took over management of the estate in 1998. The cellars were designed for energy efficiency, with adjustable temperature and ventilation. They have an unusual vertical structure extending across almost 6,000 m² underground. Winemaking combines tradition with modern technology.
