Vineyard and terroir
The Sangiovese comes from selected vineyards in Montecucco at 300 metres above sea level. The soils consist of tuffaceous clay and calcareous marl. The vineyards are farmed organically, with yields of around 6 tonnes per hectare.
Grapes
The grapes are carefully selected.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand. Fermentation takes place in open, truncated-cone oak vats, followed by malolactic fermentation in 40-hectolitre oak casks.
Ageing
The wine remains in the 40-hectolitre oak casks for at least 18 months, then matures in bottle for at least another 12 months.
Tasting profile
Elegant.
Serving and pairing
Decant or open at least two hours before serving.
Vintage notes
The 2017 growing season in Tuscany brought severe frosts in April and very high summer temperatures. Water stress produced smaller berries and lighter bunches, while frost and drought sharply reduced yields. Grape quality varied considerably but was generally much better than expected, reaching excellent levels in some places. Achieving strong results required extensive experience, careful vineyard management and an individual approach to each plot.
Label / history
The wine was called “Lombrone” until 2010. Castello ColleMassari is a medieval castle with origins dating to the Renaissance. The estate, taken over by Claudio Tipa in 1998, lies at the foot of Mount Amiata at 320 metres above sea level. Its 1,200 hectares include 110 hectares of vineyards. The underground cellars cover nearly 6,000 square metres and have a vertical layout, with controlled temperature and ventilation.
