Vineyard and terroir
Campo di Tenaglia belongs to I Campi, a limited-production collection of three Cabernet Franc crus. Its 0.8-hectare parcel occupies a steep slope at 500 metres in Tenuta di Trinoro, Val d’Orcia. The deep, well-drained soil is marly and sandy, with coarse particles of crushed limestone and clay. Facing the sunset, the site receives sunlight until late in the day. The vines were over 20 years old for the 2023 vintage.
The parcel curves around a small stand of trees; its pincer-like shape gives the wine the name Tenaglia.
Grapes
100% Cabernet Franc.
Vinification
The 2023 parcel was harvested on 4 October. Fermentation took place in stainless-steel vats.
Ageing
The wine matured for six months in French barriques and a further 12 months in cement vats. It was bottled on 18 April 2025 during the waning moon.
Technical data
IGT Toscana. Production of the 2023 vintage was 1,946 bottles, almost twice the volume obtained from the small 2022 harvest.
Tasting profile
Campo di Tenaglia 2023 is structured, with ripe tannins and substantial texture. Its long, hot summer and elevated, sunlit site shaped a firm yet fragrant character. Dark-berry aromas are joined by fresh balsamic nuances, particularly eucalyptus leaf, thyme and liquorice root.
Vintage notes
The 2023 season began with January snow, followed by a rain-filled winter that restored water reserves. Early growth in March slowed abruptly with the return of cold spring weather. Weekly rain accompanied mild conditions through the first half of June; 500 mm fell during spring and early summer, creating intense downy-mildew pressure. Summer arrived sharply at the end of June and remained above 30°C through mid-September. A green harvest reduced the crop in late July, while foliage was retained to shade the small bunches. Cabernet Franc ripened slowly before moving slightly ahead late in the season. Despite the turbulent year, Campo di Tenaglia achieved good yields.
Label / history
I Campi began with Campo di Magnacosta in 2011. Campo di Tenaglia and Campo di Camagi completed the three-cru collection in 2014.
