Vineyard and terroir
The Nebbiolo comes from the 1.8 ha Runcot vineyard, which faces south and lies at 300–350 m above sea level. The vines are 25 years old and grow in clay-limestone soils. They are trained using the Guyot system and planted at 4,500 vines/ha. The grapes are harvested in the second half of October.
Vinification
Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, with daily pump-overs. Malolactic fermentation follows.
Ageing
The wine is aged in French oak barrels for seven years. It is usually bottled in August, then spends a further 18–24 months in the cellar before release.
Tasting profile
Elegant and full-bodied.
Label / history
Barolo "Runcot" was first released in 1995. Average production is 7,000 bottles a year.
The Elio Grasso estate dates back to 1928 and has 14 ha of vineyards in the southern part of Barolo, around Monforte d'Alba. Elio, his wife Marina and their son Gianluca handle all the work in the vineyards and cellar, with oenologist Piero Ballario as consultant. Elio does not make a basic Barolo, choosing instead to show the different sides of Nebbiolo through wines from three individual crus.
