Vineyard and terroir
An old-vine Pecorino selection from the estate vineyards surrounding the cellar in Torano Nuovo. The estate farms 17 hectares of indigenous Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and Pecorino in pergola and rows within the Colline Teramane.
The vineyards receive sunlight across a broad solar arc and experience marked day-to-night temperature variation and constant ventilation. Maritime influence is balanced by cold currents from the Gran Sasso. Clay and limestone soils support roots extending several metres below the surface. Chemical products are excluded, while biodynamic preparations, permanent vegetation and cover crops encourage soil life and indigenous yeast diversity.
Grapes
Pecorino, an indigenous variety associated with southern Marche and northern Abruzzo.
Vinification
Harvesting and selection are performed entirely by hand. White grapes are foot-crushed in a large wooden vat in 350 kg batches for 40–45 minutes. This creates gentle contact between skins and juice without breaking the stems. Only the juice enters small concrete tanks, where spontaneous fermentation proceeds for 30–35 days without selected yeasts or added enzymes.
Ageing
The wine passes directly from concrete to bottle in the second spring following harvest. Fruit from the old vineyards enters the ageing cellar, and the Selezione Vecchie Vigne bottling is first released after four years. It remains unfiltered during bottle ageing and may be retained longer until ready. Bottles exceeding 20 years are individually hand-decanted, checked, topped up with the same vintage and recorked before release.
Tasting profile
Pecorino has a voluptuous and generous expression.
Vintage notes
Pecorino ripens early. In 2020, the estate harvested its 1.5 hectares over 30 and 31 August. In 2022, picking began on 24 August. The shared old-vine release schedule records Pecorino vintages from 2016 through 2018 for the 2018–2020 release cycles.
