Vineyard and terroir

The grapes come from the Poggio Granoni micro-zone at Farnetella in the commune of Sinalunga. The vineyards lie at 500–540 m on layered sand-and-silt soils and are planted at approximately 5,400 vines per hectare. Vines are vertically trained and spur-cordon pruned.

Grapes

A blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, with no percentages specified. The wine grew out of a long-term effort to explore how non-indigenous varieties could complement Sangiovese. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon provide its structural core, while Merlot contributes roundness and softness.

Vinification

Only selected clusters are used. After destemming and pressing, the must ferments and macerates in stainless steel for 16–20 days at 28–30°C, with programmed punch-downs and daily pump-overs. Malolactic fermentation also takes place in steel.

Ageing

Maturation lasts 12 months in new and once-used 225 L oak barriques. The final blend is then assembled and bottled, followed by at least 8–10 months of bottle ageing.

Technical data

Production is approximately 6,000 bottles.

Tasting profile

Rich ruby red with garnet hints. The bouquet combines leather, tobacco leaf and roasted espresso. The palate has consistent tannins and ripe red-fruit nuances, with substantial body and depth. The aftertaste is elegant and balanced.
