Vineyard and terroir
The fruit is selected at Farnetella in the commune of Sinalunga, southeast of Siena and northwest of Montepulciano. Almost all vineyards face southwest and lie on a well-exposed, ventilated bench at elevations ranging from 220 to 560 m. The layered sand-and-silt soils contain some clay and relatively substantial proportions of rock and limestone. Planting density is approximately 5,400 vines per hectare. Vines are vertically trained and spur-cordon pruned.
Grapes
Predominantly Sangiovese with Merlot. Exact proportions are not specified.
Vinification
Quality-selected clusters are destemmed and pressed. Fermentation and maceration take place in stainless steel for 10–12 days at 28–30°C, with programmed punch-downs and daily pump-overs. Drawing off and racking follow fermentation.
Ageing
In March–April, the wine is transferred to small, medium and large oak botti for 8–12 months. Bottle ageing lasts a further three months.
Tasting profile
Rich ruby red with purple highlights. The nose offers wild red berries, anise and sweet liquorice—aromas associated here with Sangiovese—integrated with subtle spice. The palate has a velvety texture, leading to a finish marked by aromatic fruit and delicate vanilla.
