Vineyard and terroir
The Sangiovese and Syrah grow in the fertile soils of the Zerbina estate. The estate's 28 hectares of vineyards lie across the low, varied hills of the Tuscan-Romagna Apennines. Local and international varieties are planted: Sangiovese (80%), Trebbiano, Albano, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and Sauvignon. The alberello training method has been used on the estate since 1990. The vines are trained on tall stakes so that sunlight reaches their whole surface, which supports photosynthesis and eases care and harvest. There are plans to convert all the vineyards to this system.
Vinification
Each variety is picked at its own optimal ripeness, so harvest dates differ. The two are vinified separately and fermented in stainless steel tanks for 15–21 days. The wine then rests in small steel vessels before the two varieties are blended and bottled.
Label / history
Fattoria Zerbina was founded in 1966 by Vincenzo Geminiani, who planted the first vineyards on the hills of Marzeno. In 1987 management passed to his granddaughter, Maria Cristina Geminiani, at first assisted by the oenologist Vittorio Fiore. She studied Sangiovese clones from Tuscany and Romagna and chose the local Sangiovese di Romagna clone, which suits the varied hill soils. She graduated from the University of Milan in oenology and agriculture. She founded "Invitation to Romagna", an organization of Emilia-Romagna producers.
