Vineyard and terroir

Eruzione 1614 takes its name from the longest recorded eruption of Mount Etna, which began in 1614 and continued for ten years. The lava flow stopped at the border of the Sciaranuova vineyard. The vines grow at 510 m above sea level on black lava sands around the Feudo di Mezzo winery. Planting density is 5,000 vines per hectare and yield is 70 quintals per hectare.

Grapes

The 2020 vintage is 91% Nerello Mascalese and 9% Nerello Cappuccio.

Vinification

Harvest takes place by hand into crates from 15 to 20 October. After destemming, the grapes ferment in stainless-steel vats with the skins at 23 °C. The must receives short pump-overs twice daily, and maceration lasts 12 days.

Ageing

The wine matures for 12 months in oak.

Technical data

The 2020 vintage has 13.5% alcohol by volume, total acidity of 5.1 g/L and pH 3.50.

Tasting profile

The colour is an especially transparent, bright ruby red. The nose recalls incense, medicinal herbs, hibiscus and wild fennel. On the palate it displays the austere profile of Etna wines, with a fruity, black-currant character. It is fresh and flowing, with a compact tannic texture; the finish evokes ash and red fruit.

Serving and pairing

Its combination of depth and flavour makes it flexible at the table. Pair with risotto, baked dishes, game, fish or cured meats. It may be enjoyed immediately or cellared for 7–10 years.

Label / history

The wine commemorates Etna’s 1614 eruption, which lasted a decade before its lava halted at Sciaranuova. The first vintage was 2008.
