Storia

Early 1800s\nThe land in Contrada Portelli, in the Trapani area of Sicily, came into the possession of the Polizzotti-Scuderi family. It was originally used to grow wheat and cotton.\n\n### Around 1920\nThe family planted its first vineyards and began making wine at the Baglio di Rilievo, located 7 km from Portelli. The building next to the present-day production facility is still used to welcome guests.\n\n### From 1960\nHalf of each year's grape harvest was sold to local cooperatives, while the remainder was used to continue making the family's own wine.\n\n### 1995\nUnder the guidance of Giuseppe Polizzotti, the entire grape harvest began to be used for the family's own wines. This marked the birth of Fondo Antico, a name chosen in tribute to the old local name for the land of Contrada Portelli.

Terroir

The vineyards lie in Contrada Portelli, in the Trapani area of Sicily.

Vinificazione

Winemaking began at the Baglio di Rilievo, 7 km from Portelli, when the first vineyards were planted around 1920. The building next to the present-day production facility is still used to welcome guests. From 1960, half of each year's harvest was sold to local cooperatives while the rest went into the family's own wine; from 1995, under the guidance of Giuseppe Polizzotti, the entire harvest was dedicated to the family's wines.

Filosofia

Fondo Antico describes its approach as bringing together a century of winegrowing experience and a deep respect for its roots with research, innovation, teamwork, curiosity, the exploration of new horizons, and a commitment to sharing its wines and Sicily with the world. The family holds that together these qualities create a distinctive approach that allows it to produce its wines. Just as coral is precious to the people of Trapani, the winery states that it sees each wine as a gem to be handled with care and appreciated; its coral-branch logo is said to reflect this philosophy, symbolizing both the delicate nature and the value of wine made in the area.
