Vineyard and terroir
The principal vineyards lie in the municipality of Cinigiano. La Fornace, near Castello di Porrona, is situated at 360 m a.s.l. with an easterly exposure and sandy sandstone soils containing clay. The second site, Vigna di Sara on the Castiglioncello Bandini side of Cinigiano, lies at 320 m a.s.l., faces south and has tuffaceous sandstone soils. Its Ciliegiolo was planted in 1973. A small portion of the fruit comes from an early selection across the Montalcino vineyards.
The vines are reported as 23–49 years old, planted at 4,000 vines per hectare and trained to spurred cordon. Farming is organic.
