Vineyard and terroir
Sangiovese comes entirely from the 1.6 ha Vigna del Bosco at 450 m a.s.l. The clay-loam and clay-schist soils are cultivated organically and biodynamically. The vines average 23 years old, are planted at 4,000 vines per hectare and trained to bilateral Guyot.
Grapes
Sangiovese.
Vinification
Harvest takes place between late September and the first ten days of October. Fermentation proceeds with indigenous yeasts in truncated-conical oak vats or concrete tanks, with maceration lasting 20–30 days. In recent years, the bunches have been destemmed by hand, while a portion is fermented as whole clusters.
Ageing
Ageing lasts 40–60 months in large oak casks ranging from 50 to 20 hl. The first two years are spent in 50 hl casks, followed by another three or four years in smaller, older vessels.
Label / history
Brunello represents the culmination of a ten-year interval between planting the first vineyard and producing the first bottle. The inaugural vintage was 2004.
