Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The Sangiovese comes from the 20 ha “Montesodi” vineyard at Castello di Nipozzano. The site lies at 400 m above sea level and has a south-westerly exposure. Its dry, stony and well-drained soils consist of clay and limestone and are particularly rich in organic matter.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand in early October. The must ferments in stainless-steel vats for around 10 days at approximately 35 °C, followed by 30 days of maceration and malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine matures for 18 months in 30 hL barrels of French and Austrian oak, followed by six months in bottle.
Vintage notes
In 2022, a fairly rainy autumn had left ample water reserves in the soil at the start of the year. The winter was mild but somewhat prolonged, while a sunny March brought the vines out of dormancy. Spring rain at Nipozzano was followed by summer drought and heat, moderated slightly by the area’s characteristic winds. Rain at the end of August and again at the end of September helped both early- and late-ripening varieties complete their ripening cycles. The bunches were compact and in excellent condition. Differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures encouraged the development of polyphenolic compounds and complex aromas.
Label / history
