Vineyard and terroir
The vineyards at Castello di Nipozzano, near Florence, occupy 250 hectares of south-east-facing slopes at 250–500 metres above sea level. The dry, rocky clay-limestone soils are well drained. Planting density ranges from 2,500 to 6,000 vines per hectare.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness and destemmed at the winery. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats. Maceration and malolactic fermentation also take place in steel tanks.
Ageing
The wine matures in barriques for several months, followed by further ageing in bottle in the estate’s cellars.
Serving and pairing
Aeration before serving is recommended.
Vintage notes
Autumn rainfall in 2020 replenished the soil’s water reserves. Winter 2021 was cold, with moderate rainfall, while early spring was cool and dry. Heavy rain in May restored water reserves. A rainless summer maintained balanced water stress, contributing rich colour and aroma to the grapes. Timely later rainfall and generous hill breezes allowed the fruit to complete ripening in healthy condition and with unusual elegance.
