Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from the single vineyard Sugarille. Its white, stony, slate-rich Galestro soils have a distinctive mineral composition that contributes weight, power, strength and expressiveness to the wine.
Ageing
The wine rests for 30 months: 24 months in large oak casks followed by 6 months in concrete tanks. It then matures in bottle for approximately two years.
Tasting profile
Sumptuous, rich, juicy and aromatic, with a weighty, powerful character. Firm tannins provide solid structure.
Label / history
Angelo Gaja purchased Pieve Santa Restituta in 1994. The Tuscan estate, near the province of Montalcino, dates to the 7th century AD and takes its name from the parish church of Santa Restituta; “pieve” means “church” in Italian. The parish is a distinctive example of medieval Christian architecture and art.
Sugarille has been produced since 1995 and is released only in selected vintages. Its vineyard was recorded in archival documents as early as 1541. The name derives from the Latin “suber”—“sughero” in Italian—meaning “cork”; it may refer to cork trees that once grew there.
