Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from “Podernovone,” at 500 m above sea level, and “Le Chiuse di Sotto,” at 250 m. The soils comprise galestro, slate, limestone, sand and white clay. Most of the grapes are sourced from the most vigorous vineyards.
Vinification
The grapes were harvested by hand from 16 September. Spontaneous fermentation at a controlled temperature lasted 5–6 days, followed by 18 days of maceration to develop structure and concentration.
Ageing
The wine matured for eight months in new Slavonian oak barrels of 5, 10, 21 and 25 hL. The gentler influence of Slavonian oak compared with French oak allows the wine’s acidity and sense of place to remain more prominent.
Tasting profile
Elegant and notably balanced, with a layered aroma that continues to unfold through the finish. It combines power with elegance.
Vintage notes
Heavy spring rain and a sudden summer drought made 2023 a difficult growing season. Fruit set was disrupted, causing the loss of a significant part of the crop. Careful grape selection and very good weather late in the ripening season supported the quality of the resulting wine.
Label / history
The label image, titled “Elvira in a Hat,” was created by economist and artist Richard M. Goodwin. A frequent guest at “Osteria Le Logge” and a close friend of Gianni and Laura, Goodwin admired Gianni’s mother, Elvira, who worked in the restaurant kitchen, and made her the subject of the portrait. The original hangs at the entrance to “Osteria Le Logge,” while the image appears on Gianni Brunelli bottles.
