Vineyard and terroir
The Il Poggiolo estate lies approximately 1 km southwest of Montalcino. Roberto Cosimi acquired the 65-hectare property in 1971 and planted its first three hectares of vines. Its elevated position is associated with elegance and pronounced acidity in the estate's wines.
Grapes
Sangiovese. The estate describes Sangiovese as the variety it cultivates for Brunello production.
Label / history
Sassello was created in 1985 as a selected Brunello inspired by the French cru model. It was conceived as a distinct selection and introduced at twice the price of the estate's standard Brunello, an unusual approach in Montalcino at that time.
Its origins followed the estate's first Brunello: 4,000 bottles from the 1975 vintage, made in 1980 after Roberto Cosimi had installed concrete tanks and 30-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks. Rudy Cosimi began shaping his own direction for the property after attending Vinitaly in 1984, leading to Sassello the following year. He subsequently took charge of the estate in 1989 and continued its traditional, artisanal approach.
