Vineyard and terroir

The grapes come from Valpiana near Massa Marittima in Tuscany’s Alta Maremma. The vineyards lie at 140–160 metres above sea level.

Grapes

The 2021 blend is 70% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot.

Vinification

Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. After fermentation, the wine remains in contact with the skins for a further 7–10 days.

Ageing

The wine matures for 12 months in French oak barriques. Sangiovese is placed in second- and third-use barrels, while Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot mature in first- and second-use barrels. A further six months of bottle maturation follows.

Technical data

IGT Toscana Rosso. Alcohol: 14% vol. Available formats are 0.375 L, 0.75 L, 1.5 L, 3 L, 5 L, 12 L and 18 L. The 0.375 L bottles are packed in cases of 12 and the 0.75 L bottles in cases of six; larger formats receive individual packaging.

Tasting profile

Intense ruby in colour. The nose combines cherry and plum with liquorice, pepper and other spices; the broader profile also includes ripe fruit, toasted nuances and vanilla. The palate is broad, persistent and balanced, with smooth tannins integrated into a full, decisive structure. The finish is long, and the wine has substantial ageing potential.

Serving and pairing

Pair with braised or stewed meats and game.

Vintage notes

The 2021 growing season began with normal budbreak, followed by unusually cold days when temperatures occasionally fell below freezing. Frost damage affected valley-floor vineyards and the earliest-ripening varieties. Spring and summer then progressed regularly without exceptional heat peaks. A naturally low crop load helped the vines withstand limited rainfall. Gradual ripening produced grapes with strong technological and phenolic maturity.
