Vineyard and terroir

The grapes come from selected vineyards at the Il Tesoro estate in Valpiana, Massa Marittima, within Alta Maremma. The vineyards lie at 140–160 m above sea level. Collezione di Campaccio is conceived as a selection expressing the Maremma terroir.

Grapes

The 2020 blend is 40% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot.

Vinification

Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks under controlled temperature. After fermentation, the wine remains in contact with the skins for 7–10 days.

Ageing

The wine initially matures on its fine lees in stainless-steel tanks. It then spends 20 months in first- and second-fill French oak barriques, followed by 12 months of bottle ageing.

Technical data

The 2020 vintage has 14% alcohol by volume. It is offered in 750 ml and 1.5 L bottles, packaged in wooden crates.

Tasting profile

The colour is a vivid ruby red. The aromatic profile is intense, combining sour cherry and plum with elegant wood notes and tertiary nuances of peppermint, graphite and India ink. More broadly, the wine shows wild-berry aromas. The palate is refined, persistent and well balanced, with round, smooth, mouth-filling tannins and an elegant, seductive character.

Serving and pairing

Pair with braised or stewed meats and game.

Vintage notes

The 2020 growing season began with a very mild winter and modest rainfall. A late return of low night-time temperatures caused frost problems in the vineyards. The remainder of the season developed regularly under favourable conditions. Summer was sunny, hot, dry and slightly windy, although rainfall was scarce. Early white varieties were picked in the second week of August. Sampling during the following weeks showed healthy bunches and crisp, firm berries retaining good acidity. Warm, dry September weather provided suitable conditions for completing a harvest of notably high quality.

The 2020 wine spent 20 months in French oak, matching the 2019 release; the 2014 release was aged in oak for 24 months. Bottle ageing was 12 months for all three vintages presented.
