Vineyard and terroir

The fruit grows in Barthenau at 450 m above sea level. The hillside site receives abundant sunlight and good airflow, while warm days and cool nights support full ripening and preserve high acidity. The soils comprise clay, limestone, porphyry and gravel. Only organic fertilizers are used in the vineyard.

Vinification

After several hours of cold maceration to enhance fruit character and softness, fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature in large oak casks.

Ageing

The wine matures for 12 months in 3,000 L oak casks, followed by a further six months in bottle.

Label / history

The winery has borne the name of its founder, Josef Hofstätter, for more than a century.
