Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow at 300–350 metres above sea level on a steep, southeast-facing slope. The soils are red sandy loam with clay minerals. Warm Mediterranean days and cool nights help the grapes develop their full aromatic potential.
Grapes
Lagrein is Alto Adige's oldest indigenous grape variety and is genetically related to Syrah. It is a warmth-loving variety that thrives in the hot lowlands of southern Alto Adige.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness. At the winery they are sorted, pressed and fermented at a controlled temperature in rotating tanks.
Ageing
The wine ages for 12 months in French barriques, followed by some additional maturation in large oak casks.
Tasting profile
A powerful dry red.
Vintage notes
2019: Alto Adige had a relatively mild winter, followed by an early spring with cool, wet weather in April and May. After flowering the weather turned sharply hot and dry. Limited rainfall and below-average temperatures in late summer slowed ripening. Harvest began in early September and continued until the end of October.
