Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from the "Glen" vineyard in the commune of Montan, Alto Adige. Pinot Nero is the only variety not grown in Kurtatsch's own vineyards, because it needs the cooler microclimate on the opposite side of the valley. The vineyard lies on a steep, southwest-facing slope at 450–700 m above sea level. Its soils are mainly red-brown sand and loam, with clay minerals and oxides.
The Alps shelter Alto Adige from cold air from the north, while warm, humid air from Lake Garda and the Mediterranean shapes the local climate. Warm days and cool nights help the grapes develop their full aromatic potential.
Vinification
The grapes are picked at optimal ripeness, then sorted and pressed at the winery. They receive a 3-day cold maceration. Spontaneous fermentation takes place in French oak barrels.
Ageing
The wine ages for 12 months: 70% in French barriques and 30% in large wooden barrels.
Tasting profile
An exceptionally elegant wine.
Vintage notes
2019: In Alto Adige the winter was relatively mild, followed by an early spring with cool, wet weather in April and May. After flowering, conditions turned suddenly hot and dry. Ripening slowed because of low rainfall and below-average temperatures in late summer. The harvest ran from early September to the end of October.
Label / history
"Glen" translates as "elegant".
