Vineyard and terroir
Nocera comes from the La Baronia vineyard at Capo Milazzo, in the municipality of Milazzo (ME). The site lies 40 m above sea level, surrounded by the Mediterranean and old olive trees, with five of the seven Aeolian Islands visible on the horizon.
The deep alluvial soils are loose and dark, predominantly silty and moderately rich in granite. Their upper 50–60 cm incorporate volcanic ash transported by the wind from Etna. The vineyard is planted at 5,050 vines per hectare and trained to espalier with spur-pruned cordons. The stated yield is 72 quintals per hectare, equivalent to 7.2 tonnes per hectare.
The vineyard follows organic farming criteria and SOStain® protocols. Cover crops of barley, vetch, oats and wildflowers are used to increase organic matter and nitrogen while supporting soil microfauna. Vine health is managed with small quantities of sulphur and copper. Beneficial insects, mating disruption, zeolite, kaolin and plant extracts are used against pests.
Grapes
100% Nocera, an old Sicilian variety historically associated with the surroundings of Messina and the Mediterranean coast.
Vinification
The 2024 crop was harvested by hand on 30–31 August and placed in 15–17 kg crates. On arrival at the winery, the bunches were selected manually and destemmed. Fermentation took place in stainless-steel tanks, with ten days of skin contact and a maximum temperature of 25 °C. Manual cap work and pump-overs continued until the end of this period. After racking, the grapes were pressed gently. Malolactic fermentation was completed in stainless steel.
Ageing
The wine matured in stainless-steel tanks. Bottling of the 2024 vintage was scheduled for August 2025, using a 750 ml, 400 g bottle closed with a single-piece natural cork.
