Vineyard and terroir
The 2019 technical sheet places the hillside vineyards in the Monte Vulture area around Venosa, Basilicata, at 450 m above sea level. The vines were planted in 1995 and are espalier-trained with simple Guyot pruning at 4,400 vines per hectare. The soil is loose and dry, volcanic and predominantly tuffaceous, with the characteristic colour of pozzolanic terrain and a good mineral presence. Yield is 70 quintals per hectare.
Grapes
100% Aglianico del Vulture.
Vinification
Harvest takes place by hand into crates during the second to third ten-day period of October. After crushing and destemming, the wine macerates on the skins for 15–20 days at 23–25°C. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation are carried out during this stage; the technical sheet describes fermentation in barriques.
Ageing
The wine spends 10–12 months in barriques, followed by maturation in stainless-steel tanks until the pre-bottling stage.
Technical data
The selected technical sheet covers the 2019 vintage. Alcohol is 14.5% vol. Ageing potential is 8–10 years, with maximum expression expected in the third or fourth year after harvest.
Tasting profile
Intense ruby red, developing orange nuances as it ages. The bouquet combines ripe fruit, bitter almond, wild berries, chocolate and vanilla. It is elegant, round and soft on the palate, with a firm structure and noble, mature tannins.
Serving and pairing
