Vineyard and terroir
The Sangiovese for "Luce" Brunello di Montalcino occupies 12 of the 55 ha of vineyards at the Luce della Vite estate. The soils are well-drained marl, which gives the grapes excellent conditions for ripening.
Vinification
Ripe grapes arrive at the cellar at harvest, and each batch is kept separate; keeping the grapes intact is especially important at this stage. After the best grapes are selected, they ferment with indigenous yeasts at 26 °C for 10 days, followed by gentle pressing.
Ageing
The wine matures in Slavonian oak barrels. The 2020 vintage spent 24 months in the winery's cellars.
Vintage notes
2020. The season began with a mild, dry winter, and budbreak came quickly from the last week of March. Fine spring weather supported normal vine growth until flowering began in early June. Rain between the second and third weeks of June helped the formation and growth of the young berries. The summer stayed very hot and dry until August. Toward the end of August, three very heavy rainfalls relieved the vines and removed the risk of excessive stress. Harvest took place on 23 September. The grapes were in excellent condition and beautifully ripe, helped in part by the differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures over the final weeks before harvest.
Label / history
Brunello was created in Montalcino in the second half of the nineteenth century and was the first wine to receive DOCG status, in 1980.
