Vineyard and terroir
Carla 6 comes exclusively from vineyard No. 6, planted in 1999 with a south-west exposure. Its distinctive substrate of grey schist and sand contributes mineral and graphite-like qualities. The plot was selected following a study of the estate's soils as a site where Sangiovese could express its character particularly well.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese.
Vinification
For the 2021 vintage, clusters and individual berries underwent particularly rigorous selection across two sorting tables. Fermentation took place in stainless-steel tanks.
Ageing
The wine matured separately in French oak tonneaux, 30% new. Élevage continued for a further six months in a concrete tank before bottling in July 2023.
Technical data
I.G.T. Toscana. Alcohol: 14%. Total acidity: 5.39 g/L. pH: 3.36. Net dry extract: 31.6 g/L. Approximately 4,000 bottles were produced.
Tasting profile
The vineyard's grey-schist and sand substrate gives the wine pronounced mineral character and graphite notes.
Vintage notes
The 2021 season opened with a mild, dry winter. Above-average temperatures encouraged an early budbreak, followed by a sharp cold spell that damaged some young shoots. Spring brought abundant rain, and temperatures rose gradually until mid-June. A very hot, dry summer supported balanced vegetative growth and healthy clusters with substantial polyphenolic richness. Harvest took place on 9 October, the latest date recorded in the history of Carla 6.
Label / history
The wine grew from Giampaolo Motta and consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt's ambition to work with the demanding Sangiovese variety. The name combines the estate's designation for vineyard No. 6 with a dedication to Giampaolo's daughter, Carla.
