Vineyard and terroir

Giorgio Primo is the estate's flagship Grand Vin. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot are selected from individual plots. The wine page characterises their soils as clay- and schist-rich with abundant rocky material, while the 2021 technical sheet identifies mudstone and marly limestone.

Grapes

Blend proportions vary by vintage. The latest published vintage, 2021, comprises 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot.

Ageing

The 2021 vintage matured for 18 months in French oak barriques, 50% new. It then rested for an extended period in stainless-steel tanks before bottling in July 2024.

Technical data

I.G.T. Toscana. Alcohol: 14.5%. Total acidity: 4.85 g/L. pH: 3.65. Net dry extract: 34.7 g/L. Total polyphenols: 3,540 mg/L. Production: approximately 12,500 bottles of 750 ml.

Tasting profile

Deep, dark and nearly impenetrable red. Elegant dark-fruit and liquorice aromas introduce an intense, powerful and concentrated palate. Pronounced savouriness adds depth and carries into a long, persistent finish. The structure is firm, rich and harmonious, with dense yet well-balanced tannins. The wine has notable long-term ageing potential.

Vintage notes

The 2021 growing season began with a mild, dry winter and unusually warm conditions that brought early budbreak. A sudden cold spell damaged some young shoots. Abundant spring rain was followed by a gradual rise in temperature through mid-June. The exceptionally hot, dry summer supported healthy cluster development and produced grapes of marked polyphenolic richness. Merlot was harvested in late September; Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot followed in mid-October. The vintage gave the wine pronounced balance, depth and savoury intensity.

Label / history

Giorgio Primo was created as a tribute to Giampaolo Motta's grandfather, Giorgio; the estate also connects its name with his first son. It expresses Giampaolo's passion for Bordeaux grape varieties.
