Vineyard and terroir

La Massa is the estate wine, shaped around the freshness and mineral character of Sangiovese and the richer contribution of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from the rugged Panzano territory. Lower-than-average yields in 2023 encouraged balanced ripening, concentration and fruit expression.

Grapes

Blend proportions vary by vintage. The latest published vintage, 2023, comprises 50% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% combined Merlot, Petit Verdot and Alicante Bouschet.

Vinification

The grapes were harvested by hand into small crates and passed over two sorting tables in the cellar. Fermentation took place in stainless steel. Maceration lasted approximately 25–30 days, with pump-overs and punch-downs adjusted to achieve measured, balanced extraction. Daily tastings and sampling determined the point of racking at optimal phenolic expression.

Ageing

The 2023 wine matured in French oak barriques and tonneaux, approximately 10% new. An initial period on fine lees added volume and complexity; rackings and preliminary blending were followed by further élevage. Bottling began in September 2025.

Technical data

I.G.T. Toscana. Alcohol: 14%. Total acidity: 5.28 g/L. pH: 3.62. Net dry extract: 31.6 g/L. Total polyphenols: 2,846 mg/L. Production: 100,000 bottles of 750 ml.

Tasting profile

Bright ruby in colour. Black cherry and blackberry lead the aroma, followed by graphite, Mediterranean herbs, sweet spices, balsamic nuances and underbrush. The palate is juicy and vibrant, with medium-to-full body and lively acidity supporting a layered mid-palate. Fine, integrated tannins provide structure without weight, while marked salinity carries through a clean, persistent finish.

Vintage notes

The 2023 season followed an irregular climatic course. A mild winter was followed by sharply lower temperatures and several spring frosts; late pruning limited their impact but slowed the growing cycle. Spring was cool and exceptionally wet, while summer was warm and humid. Careful vineyard work contained intense downy-mildew pressure. Harvest began at the customary time, then accelerated as temperatures rose between late September and early October, finishing in the first week of October.

Label / history

La Massa was the estate's first wine and reflects the development of its vineyard and winemaking research.
